More details to come in December.
On a personal note, a few unforseen complications coupled with teaching and business responsibilities have required more time and energy than expected and have slightly delayed the original deadlines. An added impediment was an unexpected (and unwelcomed) kidney stone. Recently, I underwent one last procedure to remove it. The good news is that the urologist doesn't expect I will develop another one.

Summer 2006 re-launch of Captain Canuck heralds the return of credible crimes Foiled by Canada’s own super hero
Cambridge, ON Over 30 years have passed since the first issue of Captain Canuck was launched in May of 1975. This summer he’ll don his new trademark red and white costume, leaping onto shelves (with Magno boots, of course) in the first of a four-part series entitled Captain Canuck Legacy.
The story weaves characters from Canada’s east coast, Ontario and the United States in an international intrigue of illegal weapons smuggling. The guns are en route from the US to Canada and only Captain Canuck has what it takes to stop the scourge from reaching the streets of our peaceable nation.
Announced just in time for Canada Day, the comic’s author and illustrator, Richard Comely, feels Canuck is still relevant after three decades because, “Captain Canuck can deal with very current issues. Things can be said and stories can be told in comic books that will resonate with Canadian and American readers. There are themes (such as national identity) that are more effectively expressed with sequential art than in another medium.”
The re-launch excitement has been heightened by preproduction groundwork for a Captain Canuck feature film. Sinking Ship Productions, Inc. of This is Daniel Cook fame has renewed their option for Film and Television rights. Digital versions of the Captain Canuck Reborn series (1993-96) will be included with select games distributed by Strategy First, a subsidiary of Silverstar Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: SSTR) and leading entertainment software developer and online video game retailer based in Montreal.
Beginning in September, Captain Canuck Legacy will also be a featured teaching tool in Comely’s upcoming position as instructor in Canada’s first and only post-graduate Comic Design and Scripting program at Mohawk College in Brantford, Ontario.
The planned release date for Captain Canuck Legacy: Issue One is mid August 2006. It will be found on comic spinners at Chapters/ Indigo book stores, other retail chains and on the shelves of discriminating comic book stores across Canada including Big B Comics (Hamilton, ON), Silver Snail (Toronto, ON) and comic book stores throughout the U.S.A.

IS THAT A MAPLE LEAF FLOODLIGHT IN THE SKY?
Summer 2006 re-launch of Captain Canuck heralds the return of credible crimes foiled by Canada’s own super hero

The comic’s author and illustrator, Richard Comely, feels Canuck’s relevance today lies in part in both the medium and the theme of the story. “Things can be said and stories can be told in comic books that resonate with Canadian and American readers and that can't be expressed in another medium. Captain Canuck can deal with very current issues, ” says Comely.
Orders for Diamond Comic Distributors from comic specialty stores will soon be tallied for the late July early August shipping date for the first issue. A very limited supply of advertising spaces remains in this historic return to print for Canada’s cultural icon. With over 200,000 search returns for “Captain Canuck” on the Internet, it’s clear devotion to this character has not waned.
The re-launch coincides with further development work on a Captain Canuck feature film and an animated TV series for the not-too-distant future and is a featured teaching tool in Comely’s upcoming position as instructor in Canada’s first and only post-graduate Comic Design and Scripting program at Mohawk College in Brantford, Ontario.

Richard Comely to teach new Comic Design & Scripting course at Mohawk College
http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/Explore_More/News/News2006/Rel20060217Capt.html

Captain Canuck and students drawn together at Mohawk for Canada's first Comic Design and Scripting Program
BRANTFORD -- He's battled time-traveling aliens in New Brunswick and a monster-making mad scientist in Northern Ontario. Thwarted a separatist civil war plot in Western Canada, foiled a counterfeiting ring in Ottawa and gone undercover in the Maritimes. Graced the cover of TIME magazine, landed on the front page of the Los Angeles Times and been given his own commemorative stamp by Canada Post. Google his name and you’ll get 52,600 hits.
And this September, Captain Canuck is off to Mohawk College to inspire a new generation of comic artists. Richard Comely, who introduced Canada's first homegrown superhero in May 1975, has signed on as an instructor with Canada's first and only post-graduate Comic Design and Scripting program
Working out of studios at Mohawk's Elgin Street campus in Brantford, up to 30 students with college diplomas and university degrees will learn drawing, scriptwriting and the business of comic design and scripting from some of the best and most experienced in the business.
Comely plans to enlist students in the start-to-finish production of getting a new Captain Canuck comic on store shelves. "While the art form has come a long way over the decades, comic books and comic strips remain storytelling with pictures," says Comely. "Mohawk’s Comic Design and Scripting program will be the only place in Canada where aspiring and experienced artists can learn how to master both of these essential elements."

Program coordinator Dan MacQueen says Mohawk is launching the one-of-a-kind program in response to employer needs. "Within the graphic design industry, there's a real shortage of artists who are as skilled with ink and paper as they are with a computer mouse and the latest software program."
Career prospects for Comic Design and Scripting graduates won't be limited to spinning tales about hard-bodied superheroes in spandex, although comic book and graphic novel sales are on the rise. Other career opportunities include storyboarding for television, movies and advertising, character and plot development for video games and illustration for children's books and educational comics.
"If you're good at it and know the fundamentals, there's no shortage of work that pays very, very well," says Comely. "Although you'll be having so much fun it willnever feel like work."

Quotes from canadian Comic book pros on the new Mohawk college course:
Graphic Novels and epic Manga are broadening the perspective of what is possible in the powerful combination of drawing and text. As everyone who watches film or TV knows, comic books can lead to even broader careers in related fields. If you love to tell stories in words and pictures, this is the place for you.
Jay Stephens Creator of numerous award nominated comic books, the weekly WELCOME TO ODDVILLE comic strip, and the Emmy Award winning television cartoon, TUTENSTEIN
I think any course that deals specifically with comic book scripting, art and general storytelling is a good thing... such a course available right here in Ontario - all the better. It could help new creators to get their projects off on the right foot. Also, I think it would be a heck of a lot of fun.
Leonard Kirk Artist, Penciller; Scorpion (Marvel), Bloodhound, Supergirl, Legion of Superheros and JSA (DC)
Like the film schools that popped up on college campuses in the '60s, courses like this can help propel forward the next generation of creators by giving them a place where their interests and talents can be nurtured by industry professionals.
Scott Chantler Illustrator, Oni Press
Finally, a program that offers artists another venue to help them to express themselves and tell stories with their art skills. This is one course I am excited to hear about and contribute to!
Logan Lee Lubera Bright Anvil Studios, Hasbro Product Designer-Boys actions/adventure.
Those of us lucky enough to write for comics learned the craft by befriending a professional who tutored us. This course is, as far as I know, the first in Canada, and Mohawk deserves credit for introducing such a program.
Mark Askwith Producer. SPACE (writer of The Prisoner, Silencers, Taboo, and Gotham Knights.
There are tons of creators within Canada itself, and I feel that there's so much more that we have to offer. It's like the saying goes..."In the right place, at the right time".
Eric Kim Illustrator; Love As A Foreign Language, Oni Press; Battle Academy, Brand New Planet, Toronto Star
Had a college offered a course like this when I was first pursuing my career, I would have jumped through hoops to attend. It would have saved me years of struggle to discover the techniques, skills and connections necessary to become a working comic book professional.
Pat Davidson Inker, Marvel Comics Spider-Man, New Mutants, Daredevil
It's a real pleasure to see a course like this offered for study in Ontario. I wish there was one when I was starting out!
Ray Fawkes DC Writer and Artist
With the growing interest in comics all over the world it is good to see that Mohawk college has taken leadership in producing a quality comic art program. In addition to the obvious career paths available from the skills acquired, students will also be gaining skills that can transferred into careers in illustration, film, graphic design and animation. I wish that I had such an opportunity when I was entering art school.
Ron Kasman Artist,Teacher, Letterer for DC comics, Image comics, Eclipse comics.
A working knowledge and practical application of Visual Storytelling technique is of the utmost importance to anyone focussed on a career in animation, film, gaming, comic books, and illustrated books, and there is a growing need for such a program, especially here in Ontario.
Ken Steacy Author/Illustrator
I'm very excited to know that my favourite art form will be part of the college curriculum, hopefully introducing to the world some brilliant new cartoonists.
Cameron Stewart Artist for DC; Catwoman, Seaguy, and Seven Soldiers: Manhattan Guardian.
There are so many talented artists in Canada. All they have needed is a comprehensive comic training course...
George Freeman Penciller, inker and colourist for (among others) Captain Canuck, DC, Dark Horse and Marvel.
Canadians have been a driving force in the comic industry since it's pre-World War II inception, and yet support for this art remains low in our nation. A focused program featuring a structured environment and professional advice can only serve to further the quality of our art form.
Ed Northcott Illustrator, Degrassi high Comics
Having a program in Ontario to encourage and develop our own talent, and teaching how to market creative skills can only enrich the lives of up and coming cartoonists, animators , writers and illustrators. A side benefit is that the skills of comic creation are highly transferable to other arts fields.
Mark Innes Publisher of Blind Bat Press comic books
It is great to hear that young talents in this country will have the option to hone their skills with an accredited course."
James Armstrong Canadian National Comic Book Expo
